Nigeria's Super Falcons pull out of a 12-nation tournament in Turkey over visa issues


           Reigning African women champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria have withdrawn from a 12-nation tournament which kicks off in Turkey this week, citing visa issues.  

The Super Falcons were scheduled to lock horns with Group B rivals France, Kosovo and Kazakhstan from 26 February to 7 March as preparation for this year's Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers, but the West Africans, who finished third at the regional Wafu Cup on Saturday, have withdrawn from the competition for logistical reasons.

Five people now confirmed dead as body is pulled from Leicester explosion rubble


        A body has been discovered at the scene of the explosion in Leicester bringing the death toll from the blast to five, police said. 

Specialist search and rescue crews from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, supported by two search dogs, have been working through the rubble.

      Bollywood superstar Sridevi Kapoor, one of the biggest names in Hindi cinema, has died after suffering a heart attack in Dubai, her family told PTI Sunday.

The shock death of the beloved Indian star aged 54, who reportedly passed away while attending her nephew's wedding in the emirate late Saturday night, prompted an outpouring of grief among fans and fellow Bollywood actors.

         Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League hopes may have been handed a major blow as Neymar was stretchered off in tears after suffering an ankle injury in a Ligue 1 clash. 

The Brazilian attacker tangled with Marseille midfielder Bouna Sarr in the 76th minute and landed awkwardly on his ankle. Clearly in agony, the 26-year-old held his head in his hands before being carried off the pitch.

        Kylie Jenner has taken to Snapchat to share an adorable video of her new baby girl Stormi. 

The clip shows the 20-year-old stroking her daughter’s tiny feet as her little toes wriggle around in her mum’s hand. The reality star can be heard behind the camera saying: 

‘Mummy’s cute little toes,’ before letting out a little squeal at how sweet her baby is. 

This is the first video footage to be released of the tot, and fans have yet to see Stormi’s face, although Kylie recently confessed that the baby looks a lot like she did when she was younger.

Manchester City Cruised to a 3-0 Win


        Manchester City completed the first part of what they hope will become a treble with a resounding 3-0 win against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

 Arsenal had started the brighter side and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looked certain to open the scoring but for a miraculous recovery tackle from Kyle Walker that diverted his effort towards Claudio Bravo. 

City, with a 27-point lead over Arsenal in the league table, made an uncharacteristically quiet start but they were ahead with their first clear opportunity when Sergio Aguero raced on to Claudio Bravo’s kick to lob David Ospina. 

John Mikel Obi Super Eagles midfielder is better than Luka Modric : Samson Siasia


           Former Super Eagles head coach Samson Siasia has stated that midfielder John Obi Mikel is better than his Croatian counterpart Luka Modric.

Both Mikel and Modric are team captains for Nigeria and Croatia respectively, and according to Siasia Mikel is the better midfielder of the duo.

D’Tigers of Nigeria defeat Uganda


       The D’Tigers of Nigeria began their World Cup qualifier on a winning note as they defeated Uganda 102-86 in Bamako, Mali.

The opening exchanges were tight as both teams tried to establish dominance. But it was the Ugandans who were quicker off the block as they won the first quarter 17-11. However, the Ugandan team fell to the superior fire power of the Nigerians in the last three quarter losing 29-36, 20-28, 20-27 for a cumulative score of 102-86 in favour of the D’Tigers.

Corruption: Nigeria ranks 148 out of 180 countries.



       The Presidency has faulted Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index 2017 released on Wednesday which indicated that corruption in Nigeria had worsened in the last one year.

According to Transparency International, Nigeria, with a score of 27 per cent, now ranks 148 out of 180 countries. The organisation said Nigeria’s latest result was worse than that of 2016 wherein the country was ranked 136 with a score of 28 per cent.

NNPC Imports 9.8 Million Metric Tons of Premium Motor Spirit

   

           The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC says it has imported 9.8 million metric tons of Premium Motor Spirit PMS worth $5.8 billion to combat the fuel crisis that resurfaced since late last year.

This was disclosed by the Group Managing Director of the corporation, Dr Maikanti Baru, during a public hearing by the Senate Committee on Public Accounts at the National Assembly Complex during the week in Abuja.

            A 22-man Environmental Sanitation and Beautification Committee saddled with the task of improving the sanitary condition of Warri has been inaugurated by the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Michael Tidi.

The committee which has 19-point mandate, including ensuring that every premises in Warri South Local Government Area has functional toilets, soak-away pits and sanitary conveniences to dispose of the waste water and feaces is also authorized to demolish all illegal and unapproved structures in the Local Government Area.

Papa Ayo who was accompanied by other members of the church, said the donation is to ameliorate the challenges being faced by the fire victims.

Air France strike to affect half of long-haul flights Today


      Half of Air France's long-haul flights out of Paris today will be cancelled due to a strike by pilots, cabin crew and ground staff, the carrier said.

The airline said Wednesday it expected to maintain 75 percent of its scheduled service but only 50 percent of its long-haul flights and advised travellers to postpone their trips until February 27 at no extra cost.

      It has been revealed that Sade, has created an original song for upcoming Disney movie, "Wrinkle in time."
The welcome news was shared by Ava Marie DuVernay who is directing the movie.

Ava who is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter, tweeted the news on Tuesday, February 20, doing little to hide her excitement.

She stated that Sade's role in the movie was a dream come true, describing the veteran singer as a goddess.

     Banky W has revealed that Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) has shut down as a record label, and pivoted to being a media and management agency.

The CEO of the company revealed that the record label which launched Wizkid‘s music career, Empire Mates Entertainment will no longer produce and sell records as their core business. This decision, according to Banky W, was made in January 2017,  9 years after they first kicked off operations.

      International Mother Language Day (IMLD) is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. 

First announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, it was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.

         Tobi has finally decided to walk out of the seeming bond between himself and his partner in the Big Brother Naija house, Cee-C.
Following Biggie's new pairing, Tobi was paired with Alex while Cee-C was paired with Lolu, the three weeks long relationship between Tobi and Cee-C saw its end.

BBC : launches Igbo, Yoruba language services in Nigeria


        The BBC this week launches its new Igbo and Yoruba services in Nigeria, as part of an expansion in local languages aimed at more in-depth reporting of countries around the world.

The digital-only services go live online and on social media on Monday, joining a platform for Pidgin speakers that was launched last year and has attracted widespread interest.

CBN bars banks with huge bad loans from paying dividends


       The Central Bank of Nigeria has stopped the payment of dividends to shareholders by Deposit Money Banks and discount houses with huge bad loans and low capital base.

This is due to the rising non-performing loans and the need to stop further erosion of the capital base of the banks and discount houses.
