History of Urhobo People and Culture

Urhobo is a group that belong to the people whose written history is largely undocumented. There is almost an absence of European record in their history. The early European were preoccupied with economic interest on the coastal communities. However, in 1505, Pereira observed that in the hinterland beyond the Forcados River, lived the Subou or Sobo a name that is corrected to Urhobo in 1938. It is significant to note that the traditions of origin of the various Urhobo groups do not contain any specific reference to their ancestor other than that ' we are or we know are Urhobo' .

The history of  Urhobo people generally began from Edo territory where the ancient town of Udo and Benin City are currently located. At the end of the Ogiso dynasty, many Urhobo and Edo-groups left Udo in different directions, each at its own pace, in search of more peaceful territories. It was natural that in those compelling circumstances, peace loving and less powerful Edo-groups had to leave the territory to seek fortunes in less populated but more economically resourceful territories.

Historically, Urhobo people's origin is rooted in their oral tradition. They believe in migration from Aka -present day Edo territory. Although all 22 kingdoms have distinct dialects and traditions that reflect slight variation in origin and migratory patterns, there is a universal Urhobo language.

GEOGRAPHICAL BACKGROUND OF URHOBO LAND AND PEOPLE

Today in History Adolf Hitler commits suicide in 1945

On this day in 1945, holed up in a bunker under his headquarters in Berlin, Adolf Hitler commits suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head. Soon after, Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allied forces, ending Hitler’s dreams of a “1,000-year” Reich.

Since at least 1943, it was becoming increasingly clear that Germany would fold under the pressure of the Allied forces. In February of that year, the German 6th Army, lured deep into the Soviet Union, was annihilated at the Battle of Stalingrad, and German hopes for a sustained offensive on both fronts evaporated. Then, in June 1944, the Western Allied armies landed at Normandy, France, and began systematically to push the Germans back toward Berlin. By July 1944, several German military commanders acknowledged their imminent defeat and plotted to remove Hitler from power so as to negotiate a more favorable peace. Their attempts to assassinate Hitler failed, however, and in his reprisals, Hitler executed over 4,000 fellow countrymen.

MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY Not the Usual

Mayday, Mayday Mayday uttered three times, is the distress call used to signal a life-threatening emergency primarily by aviators and mariners”. Long before its adoption for that function however, and more traditionally, there did exist Labour (or Workers’) Day, dedicated to the entitlement of workers to the value and dignity of their labour. The Nigerian constituency is left to determine which attribution - or both, or none - is dcefeningly clamorous this May 1 of this year, 2018. No matter, one feels it a duty to call the attention to the painful convergence of both appropriations. Could such a co-option serve equally as summons for a last-chance, eleventh hour reprieve?

Jean Clare Oge Igwegbe stated on Modern Society and the Increasing Rate of Depression

It seems like the more the world evolves, the more people are    falling into depression. Rates of depression and anxiety among young people have increased by 70 per cent in the past 25 years. It seems to be a disease of the 21st Century. Why so? We need to understand why young people are increasingly feeling so at odds with a world that ought, after all, to be all about them and their future. We need to look deeper into this dangerous twist to address it.

Depression is a bio-psychosocial problem; there are biological, psychological and social drivers of depression. It can arise due to a combination of chemical imbalances in the brain, and genetics. But what’s more is that sometimes, depression can be situational; it can be triggered through seemingly innocent things like what we are exposed to on a daily basis. The World Health Organization, in fact, finds that the causes of depression are largely “social.” For example, if you have no control over your job, or, if you go through a traumatic childhood, you are far more likely to become depressed. These depressing circumstances can produce symptoms of depression that strain our emotional and psychological balance well beyond its comfortable threshold to the point where the person becomes clinically depressed.

The history of Edo

Historical accounts are vague as to when and if the Bini Edo, migrated from the Nile valley.  What is not in doubt is that the earliest rulers of Benin were called Ogisos.

Thirty-one Ogisos in all ruled the kingdom of Benin between 900 - 1200 AD, which is the earliest period so far accounted for in Benin history.

The Bini monarchy demonstrates strong affinity with ancient Egyptian gods and Pharaohs, with which it shares identical authority, grandeur and a great deal of reverence from their subjects.
