ABUJA, (BM) – The first batch of heavy military equipment was delivered by China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) to Nigeria, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing China Military Online.
It is reported that a batch of 17 combat vehicles, consisting of VT-4 main battle tanks, an ST-1 wheeled tank and two types of self-propelled howitzers, was purchased by the Nigeria army. The cargo was delivered to the port of Apapa (Lagos) on April 8.
The Nigerian army made an emergency purchase of heavy weapons to strike at the terrorists Boko Haram (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) in northern Nigeria.
Lieutenant General Lamidi Adesun, head of the Nigeria Army policy and planning department, said Nigeria and NORINCO signed a package deal in 2019. Nigeria has become the first country in the region to own modern tanks and it is fully prepared to use and maintain such types of weapons.
Nigerian soldiers who will control the tanks, were trained in China. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese instructors who will have to train local staff in Nigeria have not yet arrived in the country.
Note that the latest Chinese third-generation main battle tank VT-4, developed by NORINCO for export. The tank uses a hydromechanical drive system, is armed with a 125-mm smoothbore gun, equipped with dynamic reactive armor, a 1300-liter turbocharged diesel engine. pp., a digital fire control system and a thermal imaging sight of the second generation.
