10 things you need to know in Nigerian newspaper this Thursday



      Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The National Convention Committee of the All Progressives Congress APC has picked June 23 as tentative date for the party’s convention instead of June 2 earlier scheduled.
Chairman of the committee and governor of Jigawa, Alhaji Abubakar Badaru, announced this on Wednesday in Abuja while inaugurating 12 sub-committees comprising 240 members for the national convention.

2. A cleaner at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport MMIA, Ikeja, Lagos State, Charity Bassey, has turned in $6,000 to security officials at the terminal. The cleaner, an employee of Lakewood Development Company, was on duty at the departure wing of the airport when she picked up the item from the floor. She recalled that she was standing in front of the toilet when a passenger drew her attention to something inside the toilet.


3. The Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Nuhu Gidado has resigned. His resignation was announced late Wednesday in a letter he personally signed, saying he has lost interest in the position.

4. The House of Representatives on Wednesday called on the Federal Government to institute stiffer measures against South Africa over the endless xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in that country. This followed a motion entitled “Urgent call for concerted Diplomatic Action to stop the recurring killings of Nigerians in South Africa” by Rep. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha Abia-PDP at plenary.

6. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC has disclosed that it will arraign a former PDP governorship candidate in Edo, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, an ex-deputy governor of the state, Mr Lucky Imasuen, and three others on Thursday.
The accused, according to the commission’s spokesman, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, will appear in a Federal High Court in Benin City for purportedly receiving N700 million prior to the 2015 general elections.

7. The Federal High Court Abuja, has ordered that the ongoing trial of former National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh will be conducted in his absence because of his misconduct. The trial judge, Justice Okon Abang gave the order on Wednesday in Abuja while ruling on an application by Metuh’s counsel, Mr Emeka Etiaba, SAN that the matter be adjourned to allow Metuh recuperate.

8. No fewer than 33 persons have been feared killed in 50 communities in Delta state following oil spillage in the areas. Report says the devastating oil spillage, apart from the havoc it wreaked on the people’s sources of drinking water, their farmlands, and the killing of their fish(es), worried residents in the affected area have fled their homes for fear of more trouble.  The spillage occurred on the 24 inches Trans Ramos crude oil pipelines, owned by Shell petroleum Development company in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.
The Federal Government, state and local governments on Wednesday shared N701 billion as revenue for the month of April. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr Mahmoud Isa-Dutse told newsmen in Abuja that the amounts shared were the outcome of Federal Account Allocation Committee FAAC meeting.

9. The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday said Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers stated would have been arrested a long time ago, if not for immunity enjoyed by Governors. The Minister said immunity was the reason Wike was not already answering questions on the allegation that the FG wanted to kill him.

10. A chieftain of the apex Yoruba social-political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has attacked President Muhammadu Buhari for speaking good of the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha. Adebanjo said Buhari spoke well of Abacha because he was his appointee and benefited from the deceased’s dictatorial regime.
