Women entrepreneurs facilitate for ‘female-owned firms’

The NECA Network of Entrepreneurial Women (NNEW), has called for the implementation of policies that empower women to establish female-owned firms especially in the Small and Medium Scale Enterprise (SMEs) sector, for economic growth of the country.
Chairperson, Lagos Chapter of NNEW, Mrs. Eunice Obasohan, who spoke during the organisation’s network meeting in Lagos, stressed that government should mitigate issues of multiple of taxes, improve the ease of doing business environment, and provide low interest loans to start businesses.
She decried the high interest rate by banks in Nigeria, which discourages business financing through loans rather she said small-business grants should be made available to women as a viable source of financing for women-owned businesses.
According to her, SMEs play an important role in creating jobs, and wealth, and remains the key to resolving many societal challenges including unemployment; hence government should support women to access interest free funds.
She said: “We do not speak for ourselves as an association, but we actually represent many businesses around. It is about government helping in the area of policies that affect businesses directly or indirectly.
“If you empower a woman, you have empowered a nation. Getting policies in place would be helpful, policies that would give women some kind of soft spots would help them grow since they are not masculine in the physical but in their mindset; We will build up to it and move forward. Whatever happens to the society, will not just affect women but also families and the nation at large.”
She explained that the network is about gathering together business-minded women, and bringing in speakers to educate members on latest trends in the business world.
“NNEW is like a mirror to ourselves to let us know what is the next level for women in business. It has become obvious that women also belong in the business world. Women need to develop themselves for the business world. Our association is a business member organisation for women to think beyond their environment and learn from each other. NNEW will ensure that the newly inducted members will be well groomed to structure their businesses to the standard that is expected through excellence in professionalism, service delivery and impacting the society positively.”
Speaking on, ‘Positioning your business in 2019 for available opportunities’, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Industry, Trade & Industry, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, said Nigerian entrepreneurs are the life blood of the nation with statistics showing that the private sector contributes about 93 per cent of the economy out of which SMEs represents 48 per cent.
Oduwole reiterated the resolve of the federal government in promoting policies that focus on encouraging both local and foreign investors in the economy.
“The entire government intervention is to enable SMEs within the country to grow. Government has made reforms in business registration, while more reforms are on-going to reduce post-business registration issues. The trust deficit in the system has made many Nigerians not to appreciate the volume of initiatives that has been put in place for the growth of businesses”.
Other speakers including Mrs. Kenny Omojola of Sycamore Nigeria Limited, NNEW Executive Director, Titi Eko, and a travel consultant, Mrs. Folake Fatade, urged participants at the forum to put aside leisure and move above all barriers toward becoming a successful business woman in the society.
NNEW is a platform established in 2005, under the aegis of Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, to promote and nurture entrepreneurship among women.
The association focuses on issues that are crucial to making their businesses thrive and fostering an enabling environment towards the success of women in entrepreneurship.

Michael Cohen testimony: As it happened

Image result for Michael Cohen

Michael Cohen, the former "fixer" and personal lawyer of US President Donald Trump, gave his testimony on Wednesday before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.
Cohen, who worked for Trump from 2006 until 2018 in roles including as his personal lawyer, co-president of Trump Entertainment and deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee, pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the special counsel's Russia probe in August.
Those charges include fraud, lying to Congress and violating campaign finance laws, which he said he committed at Trump's direction - an allegation the president has denied.
Cohen has been sentenced to three years in prison in the United States. The start of that prison sentence is set to begin in May.
Here are the key moments from the testimony:

Cohen says he fears Trump may not allow 'peaceful transition'

Cohen said during his congressional testimony on Wednesday that he fears Trump will not allow his successor to peacefully take control of the White House if he loses the 2020 presidential election.
"Given my experience working for Mr Trump, I fear that if he loses the election in 2020, there will never be a peaceful transition of power," Cohen said during his closing remarks.

Cohen says he hasn't gone through Trump's tax returns

Cohen said he's seen the president's tax returns but hasn't gone through them.
Trump broke with decades of tradition for presidential candidates by refusing to release his income tax filings during his 2016 campaign. He has said he won't release them because he is being audited.
Cohen on Wednesday undercut that rationale, saying he presumes Trump is not being audited.
Cohen said he asked Trump for paperwork about the audit to prepare Trump's response to reporters about the issue but never received any documentation.

Cohen says Trump feared tax audit

Cohen said Trump did not want to release his tax returns because he feared public scrutiny would lead to an audit and penalties.
"What he didn't want is to have an entire group of think-tanks that are tax experts run through his tax return and start ripping it to pieces, and then he'll end up in an audit and he'll ultimately have taxable consequences, penalties and so on," Cohen told the House panel.

Cohen says Trump devalued his assets to pay lower taxes

Cohen said Trump devalued his assets in order to pay lower real estate taxes.

Cohen said Trump claimed Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor, New York, was worth more than what he reported to local tax authorities. Cohen said that in order to reduce real estate bills, he would devalue the assets and then put in a request to tax officials for a deduction.
Cohen also testified he had knowledge that the president inflated his assets to an insurance company.

Cohen: Trump asked me to mislead public about hush money

Cohen said Trump called him and asked him to mislead the public about hush money paid to a porn actress.
Cohen said that Trump called him in February 2018 to discuss the public messaging about $130,000 paid to porn actress Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about allegations of an extramarital affair.
Cohen said Trump asked him to say that the president "wasn't knowledgeable" about the payments.
In fact, Cohen said Trump directed and coordinated the payments. Documents also show Trump personally signed at least one cheque paid to Cohen to reimburse him for the payments.
The White House has denied Trump had an affair with Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford.

WikiLeaks's Julian Assange says he never spoke to Stone

In a tweet, WikiLeaks said its publisher, Julian Assange, "has never had a telephone call with Roger Stone".
It added that it "publicly teased its pending publications on Hillary Clinton and published [more than 30,000] emails on 16 March 2016".
Cohen had testified that Stone told Trump about the WikiLeaks dump in a phone conversatio

Presidential Poll: Why I won’t call Buhari – Atiku

Image result for atiku
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in last Saturday’s election, Atiku Abubakar, has rejected the outcome of the poll which placed President Muhammadu Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner.
Atiku, in a statement by his Media Office on Wednesday said he is a democrat but has not congratulated Buhari because the election was allegedly rigged.
The former Vice President said if he had lost in a free and fair election, he would have called Buhari to congratulate him and also contribute his quota to ensure the unity and progress of the nation as a bridge between the North and the South.
“With regards to the Presidential elections that took place on February 23, 2019, it is clear that there were manifest and premeditated malpractices in many states which negate the results announced.
“One obvious red flag is the statistical impossibility of states ravaged by the war on terror generating much higher voter turnouts than peaceful states. The suppressed votes in my strongholds are so apparent and amateurish, that I am ashamed as a Nigerian that such could be allowed to happen.
“How can total votes in Akwa-Ibom, for instance, be 50% less than what they were in 2015?
“Another glaring anomaly is the disruption of voting in strongholds of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers and diverse other states, with the authorities doing little or nothing and in some cases facilitating these unfortunate situations.
“The militarization of the electoral process is a disservice to our democracy and a throwback to the jackboot era of military dictatorship.
“In some areas of the country, such as, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Imo states, troops deployed for the elections turned their guns on the very citizens they were meant to protect. This is condemnable and should not be associated with our electoral process in the future.
“I am a democrat and there are democratic avenues available to present the truth to the nation and the watching world. Already, many international observers have given their verdicts, which corroborate our observations. I am sure more will come in the coming hours and days.
“However, in my democratic struggles for the past three decades, I have never seen our democracy so debased as it was on Saturday, February 23, 2019. 2007 was a challenge, but President Yar’Adua was remorseful. In 2019, it is sad to see those who trampled on democracy thumping their noses down on the Nigerian people.
“Consequently, I hereby reject the result of the February 23, 2019 sham election and will be challenging it in court.
“I want to assure my supporters and the entire Nigerian people that together, we will not allow democracy to be emasculated.
“I hope and pray Nigerians will someday summon the courage to defend democracy. That is the only way we can move away from being the world headquarters for extreme poverty,” he said.

Atiku vs Buhari: Parents panic, rush to schools as APC supporters shut down Abuja

Parents residing in Dutse and Kubwa axis of the Federal Capital Territory, F.C.T panicked on Wednesday as supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari trooped out in large number to celebrate his victory in the just concluded presidential election.
The protesters bearing brooms and sticks Wednesday blocked completely the Dutse Alhaji road, making it impossible for vehicles to pass.
DAILY POST reports that unruly protesters also clashed with some military men passing through the axis before more policemen and the army were mobilized to the scene, therefore restoring normalcy to the area.
Earlier, the protesters had set burnfire on the road and taunting people perceived to be anti-APC.
Following the development, most parents who had their children in school within the axis rushed to convey home their wards.
Speaking to our reporter at the Kingdom Heritage Model School near the Winners Chapel Church in Dutse, a parent who pleaded not to be mentioned said it was normal for them to run to school when the atmosphere was tensed as the security of their children cannot ordinarily be guaranteed.
She, however, lamented the refusal of the school to release their wards to them, with the claim that they were on top of the situation.
Another parent who also pleaded anonymity said, ”I do not think the school has right to stop us from taking our wards home when there is a security threat.”
She, however, lamented that despite her complaints of the proximity of her house to the school, the school has insisted everything was normal.
Also lamenting, one Christopher Ejeh said President Buhari should caution his supporters so they ”don’t aggravate the anger of most Nigerians who feel cheated in this’daylight robbery’ election.”

The Kardashians Are 'Upset'

The Kardashian-Jenner family isn't happy that Jordyn Woods is going public with her side of the drama.
A source tells ET, "The Kardashians are upset with Jordyn’s Red Table Talkinterview, and feel like she should be focusing more on healing her relationship privately with the family or Kylie then talking about it publicly."
Woods revealed on Tuesday that she would be appearing on Jada Pinkett Smith's frequently revelatory Facebook Watch series for a candid conversation set to air March 1.
"The Kardashian-Jenners have been nothing but incredible to Jordyn and hope she’ll be respectful," the source says. "They just wish her way of dealing with it was done in a different way."
"If Jordyn doesn’t handle this the right way, any possible hope of her being back in with the family or Kylie will be gone," the source adds.
Woods appearance comes amid all the drama surrounding cheating rumorsabout her and Khloé Kardashian's now-ex, Tristan Thompson.
Woods has been a longtime friend of the family, and the best friend of Kylie Jenner since childhood.
However, this Red Table Talk appearance could cost Woods more than just her personal relationships.
Multiplesources report that the 21-year-old model -- who has appeared on the family's reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, many times -- may have signed a legally binding non-disclosure agreement that prohibits her from publically speaking about the private lives and personal dramas of the Kardashian-Jenner family members.
If Woods violated the reported NDA during her sit-down with Pinkett Smith -- which reportedly taped Tuesday morning -- the model and reality star could be facing a pricey lawsuit.

Ivanka Trump mocked by Trevor Noah

Image result for Ivanka Trump

Ivanka Trump has come under fire for remarks she made in an upcoming Fox Newsinterview.
The president’s daughter and White House senior adviser spoke about a guaranteed minimum wage during a conversation with Fox News host Steve Hilton about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Democrat-backed Green New Deal.
“I don’t think most Americans, in their heart, want to be given something. I’ve spent a lot of time traveling around this country over the last 4 years. People want to work for what they get,” Trump said in the interview.
“So, I think that this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want. They want the ability to be able to secure a job. They want the ability to live in a country where’s there’s the potential for upward mobility.”
Ivanka later tweeted she does support a minimum wage, but reaffirmed she does “not believe in a minimum guarantee for people ‘unwilling to work’.”
But that didn’t stop “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah from mocking the first daughter during his show on Tuesday night.
Noah played a clip of Ivanka’s comments before launching into his criticism.
“Are you s---ting me right now?” the host joked.
“Ivanka Trump says the thing she’s learned in life is people want to work for what they get? Really? The woman whose resume just says, ‘Daddy, I need job now.’ That woman? Really?”
Noah wasn’t the only person to respond to Trump’s remarks on Tuesday, with Ocasio-Cortez claiming the first daughter had only a “2nd-hand” understanding of work.
“As a person who actually worked for tips & hourly wages in my life, instead of having to learn about it 2nd-hand, I can tell you that most people want to be paid enough to live,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote.
“A living wage isn’t a gift, it’s a right. Workers are often paid far less than the value they create.”

Uduaghan seeks cancellation of Delta South senatorial election

Image result for uduaghan for senate
Former Delta State governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has lost in the Delta South Senatorial District election to incumbent Senator James Manager of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared PDP’s Manager the winner after polling a total of 258, 812 votes to while Uduaghan got 125,776 votes.
However, Uduaghan has called for the cancellation of the election, saying it was massively rigged.
In a petition to the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, by his lawyer, E. Otaru, Uduaghan alleged that there were massive election malpractices “perpetrated through voter intimidation, where voters were compelled to vote against their conscience by thugs, who were openly brandishing various dangerous weapons.”
Uduaghan’s petition to the state Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Commissioner came as election officials were still collating the senatorial results at Oleh in Isoko area of the state.
The former governor’s lawyer alleged that “malpractices were made possible by the collaboration of INEC officials with these thugs identified as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, supporters.”
“The areas where these malpractices were more brazen and massive include Burutu, Warri North, Warri South, Bomadi, Patani, Warri South-West, Isoko North and Isoko South Local Government Areas.”
He said voters were intimidated by thugs at polling units 5, 6, 7, 8 in Ogbe Ijoh Ward One, Warri South West LGA, parts of Bomadi, four wards in Warri South-West and part of Warri North.
According to the lawyer, “Voting slips were hijacked and in some cases, destroyed, especially in polling units where it is perceived that the APC, head the upper level.”
“Based on the foregoing, we have our client’s instructions to call on you sir and appeal that the election in the aforementioned local government areas is cancelled,” Otaru said.
