Standard Organisation of Nigeria impounds N9m substandard products in Kano

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has confiscated 552 bags of copper sugar and 227 cartons of Tasty Tom Spaghetti valued at N9.3 million allegedly smuggled into Kano State markets. The State Coordinator of SON, Alhaji Yunusa Mohammed, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday at Karaye Local Government area during enforcement operation.

Mohammed said that the feat was achieved during a raid on major shops in the state.  He said that part of the mandate of the organisation was to ensure quality assurance and standardisation of products and ensuring that people got standard and quality products for their safety. According to him, sugar must have a purity colour grade of 145 icumsa and most of the sugars imported into Nigeria have high icumsa grade level.

The coordinator said the purity should be determined by the colour, explaining that in the process of producing sugar, some chemicals were put into it which have health implications, if consumed.  He said that the organisation would not relent in ensuring that only standard products were taken to the markets. “We will ensure that substandard products are taken out of markets in Kano and its environs. “We are tirelessly working toward sustaining our enforcement efforts in the state and no stone will be left unturned in our crusade,” he said.
