POLITICS: 200 APC members defect to PDP in Ekiti

Barely four months to Ekiti governorship election slated for July 14, about 200 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have dumped the party for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Speaking at the ceremony in Ayetoro Ekiti on Wednesday, the defectors led by a former local government APC Deputy Chairman, Mr. James Afolabi told newsmen that he left the party alongside his followers because internal democracy was not at its best practices in the APC.

Afolabi further explained that he joined the PDP to get fairness, justice and equity in the party, which he said was lost in the APC.

Other defectors who spoke at the event include, Oluwole Gbenga, who told the gathering that he was leaving the APC for PDP because of developmental projects embarked upon by Governor Ayodele Fayose’s administration in the state as well as its people-oriented drives.

“I’m defecting because I have seen the efforts of the PDP; the purposeful government the PDP is giving the state is one of the factors that enticed me to crossover from APC to PDP,” he said.

On his part, the lawmaker representing the area, Hon. Jeje Samuel Abiola told newsmen that the defectors were thrilled by the good works of Ayo Fayose’s administration in the state.

He noted that the defectors voluntarily joined the moving train of Fayose to attract more developmental projects to the state.

The lawmaker lauded the step taken by new members of the party, adding that they would be accorded all rights and privileges derived by old members of the party.

The deputy Governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola and the Speaker, Hon. Kola Oluwawole who received the defectors on behalf of the leadership of the party pointed out that there was no sentiment in the party.

Olusola added that the defectors would be adopted into the party and they would be accorded the rights and privileges.
