  1906 Troops in Paris made many arrests during a May Day protest
  1925 The island of Cyprus became a British colony
  1926 British miners went on strike, & stayed on strike until November



  1931 The Empire State Building, in New York, was completed
  1960 Gary Powers, in a U2 spy plane, was shot down and captured by the USSR
  1961 Betting shops were legalised in the UK
  1962 The Federal Government declares a state of emergency in the Western Region. The first census in Nigeria since attainment of independence is held, amidst controversy.
  1966 Northerners who felt the new system would bring the Northern Region under the
domination of the South, rebel against it and kill many easterners, mostly lgbos who
lived then in the North.
  1968 Legoland, in Denmark, was opened
  1982 British aircraft bombed Port Stanley airport, in the Falklands
  1982 President Shagari commissions the N125 million Oshogbo Steel Rolling Mill.
  1986 There was widespread trouble throughout Britains prisons as prison officers went on strike
  1996 Lagos home of Lt Gen Alani Akinrinade(rtd) is ravaged by fire resulting from a petrol bomb.
