The commencement of Home-Grown Schools Feeding programme in Bauchi State has prompted transfer of many children from private to public schools.
Jama'are Local Government Focal Person, Malam Umar Ishaq Jama'are said that the feeding programme has been effective in the area and has motivated parents to enrol their wards into public schools. He said that the feeding had as well improved learning and the nutritional intake of children in rural areas. Ishaq emphasised that with the emergence of the programme in the local government, some parents have transferred their wards from private schools to public schools to benefit from the gesture.
While speaking, the Jama\'are local government education Secretary, Alhaji Zakariyya Jibril confirmed that there are many parents who are willing to transfer their wards from private to the public schools, considering the importance of the programme towards pupils\' learning, health and increase in their productive potentials. He added that since the commencement of the programme, they have negotiated and received three community primary schools that were built, manned and fully run by the communities for inclusion into the feeding programme.
Jibril described the feeding programme as an education intervention which facilitates access to education, increase attendance and retention rates. He reiterated that the programme also improves the nutrition of school children, there is therefore the need for collective and individual responsibilities of all stakeholders. He commended government for initiating the programme which he said could reduce the existing gap between rural and urban schools in enrolment.
