La Liga set for legal battle with FIFA over vote to expand World Cup to 48 teams

The sport's world governing body voted unanimously in favour of the increase and the expansion will come into play in 2026

La Liga are set to open legal proceedings against FIFA after the World Cup was expanded to 48 teams.
However, Spanish football bosses are livid with the decision and plan to fight it, according to Sky Sports.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino was told that Europe's professional leagues had to be consulted before the vote was made, but La Liga chiefs say that didn't happen.
Infantino has refuted the suggestion that money was the real reason behind the tournament's expansion.
"It is the opposite, it's a football decision," he told the BBC.
He added: "Every format has advantages in financial terms. We were in a comfortable situation to take a decision based on sporting merit.
"This is a historic decision which marks the entrance of the World Cup into the 21st Century."
Revenue is expected to rise to £5.29billion for the 2026 tournament, giving a potential profit increase of £521million.
