“We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries”

“From this day forward it’s going to be only America First. America First,” Trump says.
“Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs, will be made to benefit American workers and American families.”

“We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries”, he says, “stealing” our jobs.
Protection will lead to great things, he adds.
“I will fight for you with every breath in my body and I will never ever let you down.
“America will start winning again, winning like never before.
“We will bring back our borders, we will bring back our wealth, and we will bring back our dreams.”

American wealth has been “ripped from their homes and redistributed across the world”

We are “one nation”, Trump says. “We share one heart, one home, and one glorious destiny.
“The oath of office I take today is an oath of allegiance to all Americans.”
We’ve “enriched” other nations at the price of America, he says.
“Trillions and trillions of dollars” have been spent in other nations, he says.
“We’ve made other countries rich while the wealth, strength and confidence of our country has dissipated over the horizon.
“One by one the factories shuttered and left our shores with not even a thought for the millions and millions of American workers who were left behind.”
He says the wealth of the middle class was “ripped from their homes and redistributed across the world”.

“This American carnage stops right here and stops right now"

“But for too many of our citizens a different reality exists,” Trump says.
“Rusted out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape.”
He cites education and inner-city poverty and “the crime”.
“This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.”

Trump credits "a historic movement"

“January 20, 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again,” he says.
“The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.
“Everyone is listening to you now. You came by the tens of millions to become part of a historic movement the likes of which the world has never seen before.”
The foundation of this is that “a nation exists to serve its citizens”, he says. “These are just and reasonable demands of righteous people and a righteous public.”

"Washington flourished but the people did not share in its wealth. That all changes today"

“We are transferring power from Washington DC and giving it to you, the people,” he says.
“For too long,” he says, “Washington flourished but the people did not share in its wealth.
“Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs.”
He adds: “That all changes starting right here and right now. Because this moment is your moment - it belongs to you.
“It belongs to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across America.”

Trump's speech vows to “rebuild our country and restore its promise”

In his opening remarks Trump thanks ex-Presidents Carter, Clinton, Bush, Obama, “fellow Americans and people of the world.”
He says the American people have now joined a great effort to “rebuild our country and restore its promise”.
“Together we will determine the course of America and the world for many many years to come”.
He says there will be “hardships” and challenges “but we will get the job done”.

Trump takes the oath and officially becomes President

Donald Trump has taken the oath of office and is now the President of the United States.
“I Donald John Trump do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God.”

Vice President Mike Pence has been sworn in

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has now stood to administer the oath to the Vice President Mike Pence:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”
And that’s it. He’s in. “Congratulations”, the Supreme Court Justice says.
