Minister of State
for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, recently said the construction of second
runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) was more viable than
building of another airport in Abuja.
Responding to
questions during a public hearing on the $5.5bn foreign loan request of the
Federal Government organized by the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign
Debts, he said the country don’t have money to build a new airport in Abuja.
Chairman of the
committee, Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna) had questioned the rationale behind
the decision of the Federal Government to construct a second runway at
NAIA. Sani said: “We are looking for money to build a new runway in NAIA.
How much do we need to build a new airport in Abuja?” Sirika while responding
said: “An airport is not only about a runway. It requires a lot of
infrastructure and tremendous amount of money.”
