Delta State Government has vowed to tackle
the perennial flooding problems in Asaba and other parts of the state.
The state Commissioner for Information, Patrick Ukah, in a statement by his Special Assistant, Sam Ijeh, said the state government was working on short and long term measures to address the flooding menace.
Ukah said as part of the short term measures to ameliorate the effects of flooding in the state, old canals were being cleared while new ones have been created in flood prone areas of the state.
He disclosed that a 10 kilometre canal from Mgbalamgba to Iyeti rivers for onward discharge to river Ase had been created in Isheagu, Aniocha South Local Government Area and another one in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.
According to him, existing canals in Koko, Agbor, Ughelli, Sapele, Agbarho, Anwai camp 74, Warri as well as other towns have been cleared to ensure free flow of water.
He said that regular distillation of drains on Okpanam Road and the Core Areas in Asaba, the creation of ‘catch pits’ in Delta Broadcasting Service DBS, Asaba, front of old Secretariat and Airport view, off Okpanam Road were also part of the short term measures to check the menace.
