If you were on Twitter last night, you may have been caught up in rumours that the Queen had died.
Well, we can assure you she is absolutely fine.
Buckingham Palace has issued a statement this morning confirming that so you can all relax.
The Palace spokesman said: ‘The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh continue to recover from their heavy colds.’
The rumours started last night when a spoof BBC news account sent people into meltdown after announcing her death on Thursday evening.
And, judging by 2016’s track record of deaths, the rumours quickly spread across the internet.
Conspiracy theorists even accused the British press of trying to cover it up by using the #mediablackout to spread their claims.
It is so 2016 that we all immediately believed that The Queen was dead because IT'S 2016.
— kat calvin (@KatCalvinLA) December 29, 2016 I just fell for a fake BBC account announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II because it seemed obvious with this year.
— Christopher Campbell (@thefilmcynic) December 29, 2016 One person even claimed to have spotted television news teams setting up outside the Palace and that BBC staff had already started wearing black in preparation to go into mourning.
The rumours come after the Queen became too ill to attend Christmas Day mass and a visit to Sandringham Palace due to a ‘heavy cold’.
Twitter appears to have gone bonkers overnight over a supposed media blackout – folks will be so disappointed come 8 a.m.
— Rory Cellan-Jones (@ruskin147) December 30, 2016 Fortunately, she’s on the mend and will hopefully be back to being the best Queen ever.
Just one parting word to 2016 – don’t you even dare.
