Teachers in Delta State are not in agreement with the government over the state of the strike action, which they embarked on two week ago.
While Governor Ifeanyi Okowa gave a marching order to the teachers to resume work today, March 20 or forfeit their pay, the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, is insisting that their demand have not been met.
The union leader, Joe Iyalakhue told journalists in Asaba, that the governor’s threat of no work, no pay had not addressed the problem of their unpaid salaries.
But a statement by the Director of
Information, Paul Osahor, said the state’s salary obligations to public
servants, including teachers had been fulfilled, describing the strike as
ill-timed, considering that the West African Senior School Certificate
Examination would commence today.
Meanwhile, a statement by the state
Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, C. K. Okoh, has
announced the suspension of the strike.
