Federal Government to enact a `Meat Hygienic Act’

To regulate the operations of abattoirs and slaughter slabs in the country, Federal Government is making moves to enact a `Meat Hygienic Act’.

Dr Shehu Ahmed, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, disclosed this at the official handover of the rehabilitated Lafia modern abattoir to the Nasarawa State Government.
Reacting to the deplorable state of abattoirs and slaughter slabs across the country, Ahmed expressed belief that the move is to ensure the supply of healthy meat and other livestock products for public consumption.
According to him, out of government’s readiness to address the situation, budgetary provision to upgrade facilities in some selected states has been made.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government is also seeking partnership with state governments and other interested investors in abattoir development to improve food safety in the country.
