Trump Promises Wins On Healthcare, Tax Reform, Infrastructure
President Donald Trump touted his accomplishments during a visit to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he promised major victories on tax reform and healthcare.
“No administration has accomplished more in the first 90 days,” Trump said yesterday, according to Politico , after he toured the tool manufacturer Snap-on. “That includes on military, on the border, on trade, on regulation, on law enforcement — we love our law enforcement — and on government reform.”
“We wanna get that approval,” Trump said. “And it just makes the tax reform easier, and it makes it better. It’s gonna make it steeper. It’s gonna be bigger, and that’s what we wanna do.”
Despite Democrats’ doubts about his plans for tax reform, Trump maintains that his administration is “in very good shape on tax reform.”
“We have the concept of the plan. We’re gonna be announcing it very soon,” he continued. “But healthcare, we have to get the healthcare taken care of.
And as soon as healthcare takes care of, we are gonna march very quickly.
You’re gonna watch. We’re gonna surprise you. Right, Steve Mnuchin? Right?”
Trump also mentioned “infrastructure,” and a “big infrastructure bill,” is coming “soon” to fix the county’s “badly depleted infrastructure,” though he did not specify when.
“Probably use it with something else that’s a little bit harder to get approved in order to get that approved. But infrastructure is coming, and it’s coming fast.”
Trump To Meet Turkey’s Erdogan In May Before NATO Summit
Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan will meet US President Donald Trump in May ahead of a meeting of the NATO alliance, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said yesterday.
On Monday, sources in Erdogan’s presidential palace said Trump had called Erdogan to congratulate him on winning a referendum to expand his authority.
Trump To Host Palestinian President Abbas On May 3
US President Donald Trump will host Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Washington on May 3, the White House said yesterday.
“They will use the visit to reaffirm the commitment of both the United States and Palestinian leadership to pursuing and ultimately concluding a conflict-ending settlement between the Palestinians and Israel,” White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters.
Trump “Asolutely Not” Trying To Talk Down Dollar – Mnuchin
US President Donald Trump is “absolutely not” trying to talk down the strength of the dollar, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was quoted as saying in the Financial Times on Wednesday.
Trump said last week in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the dollar was “getting too strong”, and backed away from labelling China a currency manipulator.
Mnuchin had played down that comment on the dollar in an interview first published late on Monday in the FT. In a more detailed version published on Wednesday, he directly rejected the idea that Trump was trying to talk down the dollar, saying “Absolutely not, absolutely not.”
The dollar gained after Mnuchin’s initial remarks late on Monday.
But on Wednesday the euro hit a three-week high as the dollar was weakened by doubts over a fiscal boost promised by the president and by the pricing out of bets on three U.S. Federal Reserve interest rates hikes this year.
Mnuchin also said the Trump administration did not deem foreign countries to be manipulating their currency if they did so in a way that benefited Washington.
“To manipulate a currency you have to be doing it to disadvantage the United States,” he said.
The Treasury report recognised what many analysts have said over the past year, namely that China has recently intervened in foreign exchange markets to prop up the value of the yuan, not push it lower to make Chinese exports cheaper.
Finance ministers and central bank chiefs meet in Washington this week for the International Monetary Fund’s twice-yearly meetings. Mnuchin said addressing currency swings was “one of the IMF’s most important roles”.
Emirates Airline Trims US Flights After Trump Administration Restrictions
Emirates Airline, the Middle East’s biggest airline, said yesterday it is cutting flights to the United States because of a drop in demand caused by tougher US security measures and Trump administration attempts to ban travelers from Muslim-majority nations.
The decision by the Dubai government-owned carrier is the strongest sign yet that the new measures imposed on US-bound travelers from the Mideast are taking a financial toll on fast-growing Gulf carriers that have expanded rapidly in the United States.
Dubai was one of 10 cities in Muslim-majority countries affected by a ban on laptops and other personal electronics in carry-on luggage aboard US-bound flights.
Emirates’ hub at Dubai International Airport, the world’s third busiest, is a major transit point for travelers who were affected by President Donald Trump’s executive orders temporarily halting entry to citizens of six countries.
The latest travel ban suspended new visas for people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, and froze the nation’s refugee program. Like an earlier ban that also included Iraqi citizens, it has been blocked from taking effect by the courts.
Emirates said the reductions will affect five of its 12 US destinations, starting next month. It called the move “a commercial decision in response to weakened travel demand” in the three months since Trump took office.
“The recent actions taken by the US government relating to the issuance of entry visas, heightened security vetting, and restrictions on electronic devices in aircraft cabins, have had a direct impact on consumer interest and demand for air travel into the US,” the carrier said in a statement.
Emirates did not provide financial data for its US operations but said it had seen “healthy growth and performance” there until the start of the year.
In the three months Trump has been in office, however, there has been what it called “a significant deterioration in the booking profiles on all our US routes, across all travel segments.”
“Emirates has therefore responded as any profit-oriented enterprise would, and we will redeploy capacity to serve demand on other routes on our global network,” it said.
The cuts will reduce the number of US-bound flights from Dubai to 101, down from 126 currently.
Twice daily Emirates flights to Boston, Los Angles and Seattle will be reduced to once a day. Daily flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando will be pared down to five per week.
Like its smaller Gulf rivals Qatar Airways and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, Emirates has ramped up its US presence in recent years and recently launched a new service to Newark via Athens.
Several big US carriers have bristled at the Gulf airlines’ U.S. push, accusing them of flooding the market with capacity while receiving billions of dollars of unfair government subsidies. The Gulf airlines deny the allegations.
Delta Air Lines and United Airlines both stopped flying to Dubai last year, leaving Emirates the only carrier to offer direct US flights to what has become the world’s busiest airport for international traffic.
Trump To Hold News Conference On US Veterans Issues Next Week
US President Donald Trump said yesterday he will hold a news conference on April 27 to discuss veterans issues, as he tries to elevate an issue he campaigned on heavily last year.
Trump made the statement as he signed into law the Veterans Choice Program Extension and Improvement Act, which allows veterans to obtain more access to healthcare outside the Department of Veterans Affairs system.
The news conference was scheduled to be held as Trump nears the 100-day benchmark of his presidency on April 29.
Trump spent a lot of time advocating for better treatment for veterans during his presidential campaign last year. He said that at the news conference he would discuss progress at the VA since he took office on Jan. 20.
