Iraqis open up new front to retake city from Islamic State

Iraqi armed forces say they have opened a new front in the operation against  Islamic State, IS, militants in the city of Mosul.

Report says, New troops are advancing from the north on an IS-held enclave in the north-west of the city and will join troops who are already advancing from the south, supported by US-led coalition forces.
The Iraqi army says it has recaptured 70% of western Mosul in the offensive that began in February.
The operation's commander Staff Lt Gen Abdul-Amir Yarallah told newsmen that the operation would seek to "liberate Mosherfa, al-Kanesa and al-Hermat" districts.
Those areas include the Old City centre and the mosque from where the IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed the establishment of a "caliphate" in 2014, shortly after IS captured the city.
