The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has inaugurated a 14-man steering committee to coordinate a comprehensive reform of the country’s judiciary.
Justice Onnoghen said the establishment of the committee arose from his observation of the urgent need to undertake a holistic review of the operations of the nation’s judiciary.
According to him, the move would help to identify the challenges hindering the efficient and effective operation of the judiciary as an independent arm of government.
The committee is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the administrative structure and operations of the three arms of government, with a view to exploring areas of comparative advantage and mutual cooperation.
The committee, headed by the Secretary of the National Judicial Service Commission, Bilkisu Bashir, and an Assistant Director of Administration at the Supreme Court, Royal Issah, as the secretary, has a period of one month to submit its report and recommendations to the Chief Justice.
