Federal Government to revisit establishment of maritime University
Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, says that the Federal Government will revisit the establishment of Maritime University at Okerenkoko in Delta State and six others across the country.
Peterside, who made the disclosure at INTELS, Onne Port, in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State at the 2017 Seafarers’ Day tagged, ‘Seafarers Matter,’ said that the maritime universities will help in the training and retraining of seafarers, adding that work will start in Okerenkoko in October.
He added that the agency had given priority to the development of human capacity through multi-strategy approaches which would encourage graduates to take up career at sea.
Peterside said that the agency as a maritime regulatory body was committed to the full implementation of the International Labour Organisation’s Maritime Labour Convention, MLC 2006, for the well being of seafarers, adding that the Cabotage Act is already undergoing review by the National Assembly.
