More than 70 per cent of Nigerian prison inmates are awaiting trial

Disclosing this during a visit to Kano Central Prisons, Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, said the visit was to demonstrate to the inmates that the government was aware of the challenges they were grappling with, adding that the move is also to mark this year’s Eid-el Fitr celebration.

The minister lamented the high number of awaiting trial inmates, even as he lauded the state governor for providing a vast expanse of land for the building of 3,000 capacity modern prisons in the state.
Conducting the minister round the prison, Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, he revealed that he had authorised the release of over 550 inmates.
