Senate to summon 38 VCs over tuition fees hike

Senate would summon Vice Chancellors of 38 Federal universities over increase in tuition fees, chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano) said yesterday.

Jibrin stated this in reaction to the statement credited to the chairman of the Academic Staff of Universities (ASUU) of the University of Ibadan, Dr Deji Omole that 38 Universities have increased their tuition fees over poor funding by the Federal Government.

The Universities include University of Lagos (UNILAG), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), University of Nigeria (UNN), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Bayero University Kano (BUK), University of Abuja, Usman Danfodiyo University (UDUS), University of Ilorin, and National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) among others.

Jibrin in a phone interview said the VCs would be invited, when the Senate resumes from Sallah break to explain why they increased the fees. The Upper Chamber resumes next Tuesday.  The lawmaker, who faulted the increase, said most of the Universities in the country are not properly managing their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) including tuition fees.

“There are abuses of IGR in almost all the Universities. Our preliminary investigations have shown that there is general abuse of IGR in our universities. We have beamed our searchlight on it. We will ensure proper utilisation of the IGR including tuition fees, “he said.  Jibrin while urging the Universities to look inward for enhanced revenue generation said the Federal Government was seeing to the funding of the higher institutions.
