Inspector-General
of Police, Idris Ibrahim, has said stiff punishment, including capital
sentence, can curb kidnapping-for-ransom in the country.
He
noted that criminals were not deterred from the nefarious act because of the
slow judicial process and the light prison terms handed down to offenders by
the court.
Speaking
at the monthly IG conference yesterday in Abuja, Idris said that youths in
communities along Kaduna-Abuja highway for the high incidence of abduction in
the area.
He
therefore asked the Niger, Kaduna states and Federal Capital Territory
Commissioners of Police to visit and relate with the community members on the
dangers of kidnapping.
He also
admonished all state CPs to continually raid all black spots and criminal
hideouts in their jurisdictions.
