Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom
State, has dissolved the board of the State Independent Electoral Commission,
AKISIEC.
The dissolution, which took members
of the board by surprise, came few months to the conduct of the local
government elections slated for November 11, 2017.
The out-gone commission, which was
chaired by Gloria Ukpong, was set up in 2007 by former Governor Godswill
Akpabio and had conducted elections into councils in the state since 2008 and
2011.
According
to reliable sources,
the dissolution of the commission followed a petition by the All Progressives
Congress, APC, in the state seeking the removal of Ukpong.
It will be recalled that APC in the
state had instituted a legal action against the state government, which crippled
the board of AKISIEC from parading as a genuine body to conduct the forthcoming
elections.
Counsel to APC, Victor Iyanam, said
the continued stay of Ukpong and her board violated the law establishing
AKISIEC, which provides for one single term of five years for the chairman and
members of the commission.
