Borno State government has embarked
on the construction of 10.7-kilometre perimeter fencing of the University of
Maiduguri, UNIMAID, to safeguard it against Sambisa Forest, from where suicide
bombers have been invading the campus.
The university has experienced no
fewer than 10 suicide attacks in the last six months, killing several persons,
including Professor Aliyu Mani of Veterinary Medicine Department in a Mosque on
January 16.
It also embarked on the
rehabilitation of the dilapidated and abandoned 185-kilometre
Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu Road through direct labour, to ease movement of goods and
services.
The Commissioner for Works and
Transport, Adamu Lawn, who disclosed these during his inspection of ongoing
projects, told journalists that Governor Kashim Shettima was disturbed with the
increasing cases of suicide attacks in the only existing university due to its
porous borders with Sambisa Forest.
According to him, this is the reason
the state government is fencing the university to safeguard it against further
attacks by insurgents.
