Opponents of Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif’s on Tuesday called for his resignation after an investigation into his family’s overseas assets found “glaring gaps” between its declared wealth and known income sources.
A team of investigators appointed by the Supreme Court in April investigated Sharif’s family assets in London and offshore wealth abroad that were revealed in 2016 leak of documents from a Panama-based law firm.
Sharif’s political opponents, including former cricketing star Imran Khan, said the prime minister must step down immediately because he has been accused of a “very serious” financial crime.
The rightwing Jamaat-e-Islami party and the group of former president Asif Ali Zardari also called for Sharif’s resignation on Tuesday.
His political aides, however, rejected the investigation report, terming it a conspiracy against the prime minister and democracy in Pakistan.
The team interrogated Sharif, his two sons, a daughter and other family members during the investigation that lasted for more than two months.
“There are glaring disparities between the declared income and the known income sources of the family,” the investigation concluded in the final report that was submitted to the Supreme Court on Monday.
The South Asian nation with a population of 200 million has a history of civilian governments being overthrown either by military coups or by judicial activism.
Sharif, known for his opposition to a political role for the powerful military, has twice been removed as prime minister in 1990s. (NAN)
