Enyimba moved up to third place on the Nigerian
Professional Football League log as MfonUdoh's rocket secured a
vital 1-0 home victory over Akwa United in Calabar.
With title rivals Plateau United
having already secured a comfortable 2-0 win on Wednesday, the former
champions fought to keep their title hopes alive and Udoh’s clever
finish handed GbengaOgunbote’s men the slim victory.
The Uyo based outfit went into the
encounter with high hopes of swimming out of the relegation waters, while the
hosts were seeking a home victory to reduce cut points gap with leaders Plateau
United to four.
Udoh failed to fire the home team in
front in the sixth minute as Enyimba wasted several scoring chances in the
opening half, but the visitors were also a match for the Aba based side.
However, it was the former Akwa
United man who broke the deadlock in style from 20 yards in the 82nd minute to
silence his former club.
