FG blames past administrations for poor rural roads

Lokpobiri

The Federal Government has decried the poor road network linking rural communities with urban centres in the country, saying that the development was traceable to lack of genuine concern on the part of successive administrations.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, stated this while declaring open the National Sensitization Workshop on selection of states to participate in the third Rural Access and Mobility Project (RAMP-3) organised by the Federal Project Management Unit, FMPU.

The project which is being funded by the World Bank, French Development Agency, African Development Bank and participating states, is aimed at opening up access to rural areas as part of government’s commitment to boost agricultural production with emphasis on reducing post-harvest losses and wastage.

Justifying the scaling up of the third phase of the project, the Minister said that RAMP has, within a short period, recorded impressive performance as more states were now signing up for it.

“From just two pilot states (Kaduna and Cross River) that participated in RAMP-1 in 2006, the project has grown to seven states with five selected under RAMP-2. More states will be selected in RAMP-3 than we had in RAMP-2,” he added.
