Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and Cooperation has confirmed that after 37 years of frosty relations, Morocco
and Cuba have re-established diplomatic ties,
Morocco broke relations with Cuba
after the latter recognised Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, SADR, in 1980.
An agreement on the restoration of
diplomatic relations between Morocco and Cuba at the level of the ambassadors
was signed on Friday in New York by the two countries’ permanent
representatives at the United Nations.
According to the agreement, the
restoration of these relations “reflects the interests of the two countries”
and was “guided by the mutual will to develop friendly relations and
cooperation in the political, economic and cultural fields.
The Moroccan decision is part of the “pro-active
diplomacy” advocated by the king, which is “open to new partners and
geographical areas,” a Foreign Ministry statement said, adding that the monarch
gave instructions to open an embassy in Havana.
