The Nigeria Union of Teachers is
calling on State Governments to take up the funding of primary education rather
than leaving it to the Local Government Councils.
It’s Secretary-General of, Ikpe
Obong, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, saying that
constitutionally, the management of primary education was the responsibility of
State Governments.
According to him, Nigeria’s constitution
gives Local Governments participatory role in the management of primary
education.
Furthermore, Obong argued that salaries
of primary school teachers should be paid alongside other workers in the state
to ensure equal treatment of workers.
