Champions League: Ronaldo scores 3 as Real Madrid overcome 10-man Bayern Munich after extra-time

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s hattrick earned Real Madrid a place in the UEFA Champions League semis at the expense of Bayern Munich.

The reigning European champs twice came from behind to beat the German side 4-2 after extra time in Madrid. The result on Tuesday night seals a 6-3 aggregate win and sees Real join city rivals, Atletico in the last four.

Atletico meanwhile came away from England with a 1-1 draw at Leicester City, thus ending the latter’s European fairy tale with a 2-1 aggregate win. In Madrid, Real began the game with a 2-1 lead from last week but it was Bayern that drew the first blood courtesy of Robert Lewandowski‘s 53rd minute penalty.

Ronaldo headed in the home side’s equaliser after 76 minutes but Bayern got back in front two minutes later through a Sergio Ramos own goal. Arguably the game’s turning point arrived in the 84th minute, though, when Bayern’s Arturo Vidal was sent off.

The German side held on to force the game to extra-time, during which Real took full advantage of the man advantage. Ronaldo looked to be offside when fired a half volley to equalise again after 105 minutes.

The Portuguese superstar went on to seal his hattrick in the 110th minute with a goal made by Marcelo‘s solo run from midfield which saw him breeze past three Bayern players before unselfishly squaring for Ronaldo to tap in.
