Eight Federal Universities and one
Teaching Hospital in Nigeria are set to enjoy uninterrupted power supply from
off grid captive power plants, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed
with the Rural Electrification Agency, REA.
The institutions include Federal University of Petroleum Resources in Effurun, University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, Abubakar Balewa University in Bauchi state, Bayero University in Kano state, Usman Danfodiyo University in Sokoto state, Federal University of Agriculture in Makurdi, Nnamdi Azikwe University in Awka, and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife.
Seven of the nine planned power plants will be fuelled by solar energy, in line with the Federal Government’s energy mix policy and will be completed in 2018.
The program which comes under the first phase of Energizing Education Programme will also install street lighting to enhance security measures on campuses, develop and operate training centres for student training on renewable and eventually.
Present at the signing ceremony were the Head of Special Projects, REA, Anita Otubu, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof Abubakar Rasheed and Vice Chancellors of the nine institutions.
