Senate scraps FERMA, establishes Federal Road Authority
A bill scrapping Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA, replacing it with Federal Roads Authority, has been passed by the federal upper legislative chamber.
Sponsored by Senator Kabiru Gaya, the bill received a unanimous vote by the senators after it was read for a third time.
The Senate, however, rejected the report on National Road Funds, stepping it down for further legislative action by the Committee on Works.
The proposed Road Funds Bill has generated controversy over alleged plans to introduce additional N5 fuel levy as one of the major sources of financing the fund.
In his remarks, Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided at plenary, said the Senate had no plan to increase pump price of petroleum products.
